The Gathaa fai and Boa are traditional Maldivian tools

used in the intricate craft of making Kasabu boavalhu,

the decorative embroidery that embellishes the

neckline of the Libaas, the traditional Maldivian dress.

This embroidery is known for its complexity and

cultural significance, showcasing the artistry and

craftsmanship of Maldivian women.

Gathaa fai: A wooden stand forming the embroidery

base. Boa: A round cushion atop the stand to pin and

organise threads. Foalibai: Small weights (up to 34)

made from wood or fishbone to maintain thread

tension. The process involves preparing three types of

ribbons: Hiru, Bagiyaa, Rodhigandu (the most detailed

and intricate) are woven together and hand-sewn

onto the neckline, which must be at least four inches

wide. This meticulous process reflects Maldivian

artistry and heritage in dressmaking.
